Everton came from two goals down to defeat West Bromwich Albion 3-2 in a pulsating encounter at the Hawthorns on Monday night.
The Toffees started the game with a somewhat unrecognisable back four as regular defender Phil Jagielka featured alongside youngsters Tyias Browning, Brendan Galloway and Ramiro Funes Mori.
The latter, a summer transfer from Copa Libertadores champions River Plate, was making his first Premier League start for the club as he came in for absent centre-back John Stones.
The Argentine defender was up against it early on but gradually grew into the game, atoning for his slight lack of concentration leading to a West Brom goal with a superb second-half display.
|Won Tackle||Aerial Won||Duel Won||Interception Won||Effective Clearance||Ball Recovery||Mins Played|
|Ramiro Funes Mori||2||3||6||2||10||7||90|
As per the table provided by Opta, the 24-year-old was busy throughout and impressed in a number of important defensive categories against a vibrant Baggies outfit.
Mori recorded a team-high 10 effective clearances, six defensive duel winners, seven ball recoveries and three aerial winners as his side came under heavy pressure from the hosts.
Moreover, the South American was quick along the floor and reliable in possession, attributes which are vital to boss Roberto Martinez’s way of playing at Everton.
It’s unlikely that Mori will claim a regular spot ahead of Jagielka and Stones, yet Everton fans can take comfort in the fact that they have a reliable alternative when injuries or suspensions occur.
