Sol Bamba and Nedum Onuoha among top three Championship best in key category

Elland Road Revie Stand

The Leeds United and Queens Park Rangers defenders have been superb this season.

Leeds United’s Sol Bamba and Queens Park Rangers centre-back Nedum Onuoha are among the best three defenders in terms of interceptions so far this season.

The Championship is renowned for its competitiveness and full-blooded style of play, yet it’s easy to forget that there is a lot of quality too, with an increase in money helping to establish better playing staffs.

Bamba’s quality at Leeds shone through last season as he initially joined the club on loan, and since making his move permanent in the summer he has maintained his high standards.

Sol Bamba Leeds 37 9 810
Nedum Onuoha QPR 34 9 810

As per the table provided by Opta Stats, the Ivorian international has been a rock for Uwe Rosler’s side and his reading of the game is evidently exceptional for a more physically imposing centre-back.

Leeds have had a testing start to the season, facing Championship favourites Derby County and Middlesbrough away from home, as well as a very good Reading side within the first two months.

Still, the Yorkshire outfit have fared respectably, and Bamba has been one of their standout players with a hugely impressive 37 interceptions from their nine matches so far.

The Leeds star hasn’t been the only player to impress in this area, with Bolton Wanderers ace Prince topping the interception charts and QPR’s Nedum Onuoha not too far behind in third spot.

The Hoops’ 28-year-old has experienced Championship promotion before, being a part of the West Londoners’ squad which stepped up to the Premier League via the playoffs two seasons ago.

His experience for Chris Ramsey’s side will prove crucial over the next nine months, with a quick return to the top tier very much an expected target at Loftus Road.
