Mababu only made his debut for Newcastle last week, playing 45 minutes of the League Cup loss to Sheffield Wednesday, whilst he followed that performance up with his first start for the Tyneside club at the weekend.
Playing the full 90 minutes at left-back, the natural right-back kept Pedro quiet as the Magpies managed a 2-2 draw with Chelsea.
Mbabu, 20, impressed, and it appears as if he is finally ready to start living up to the promise shown when Newcastle moved to sign him in 2013.
Following his impressive performance in the Premier League, the Gazette report states that Mbabu is in line to keep his starting role ahead of this weekend’s tie with Manchester City.
Having kept Pedro quiet, if the youngster does start at right-back against City, he will be up against Kevin De Bruyne, who has started his career at the Etihad in fine form.
With Paul Dummett and Massadio Haidara stuck on the sidelines through injury, it is expected that Mbabu will keep his place in the starting XI, with Steve McClaren keen on showing faith in the youngster.
