While Arsenal’s senior stars were preparing for their Champions League clash against Greek team Olympiacos, the Gunners’ next generation were competing in a game of their own.
As is the case with the sides competing in Europe’s elite club competition, their under-19 players take part in the UEFA Youth League, and Arsenal ran out 3-2 winners against their Greek counterparts on Tuesday afternoon.
The standout performer for Arsenal was 18-year-old Spanish centre-back Julio Pleguezuelo, who scored twice to ensure his side followed up their 2-0 victory against Dinamo Zagreb with another win.
Pleguezuelo is not known for his goal-scoring prowess, having previously netted just once in 17 appearances for Arsenal’s under-21 side and failing to find the net in six previous UEFA Youth League games. But the teenager found his scoring form at the perfect time, levelling the scores at 1-1 before ultimately netting the winner.
Both the Arsenal teenager’s goals came from corners but he showed composure on both occasions, most notably the second which saw him volley firmly past the ‘keeper, leaving him with no chance of saving it.
