The defender insists he is not concerned by competition with Nicolas Otamendi as it makes the side stronger.
Mangala was brought in from Porto in a big money move last summer but struggled to adapt to the Premier League in his first season, while he has also looked shaky at the beginning of this campaign.
The club signed Nicolas Otamendi for a big price from Valencia in the summer as well, meaning the Frenchman’s place is under threat this season.
He however, is pleased by the Argentine’s arrival as it makes the team stronger, while he was also full of praise for captain Vincent Kompany.
“Nicolás Otamendi makes the team stronger,” he told UEFA.com.
“I know Nico really well, because I played with him at Porto. I know his skills and his level. Vincent Kompany has the experience to guide us, to guide me, and he is one of the best defenders in the Premier League.”
A warning for De Bruyne and Sterling
The defender is not the only one whose place could be under threat this season, with Manuel Pellegrini having a big squad to choose from.
They spent heavily this summer bringing in the likes of Raheem Sterling and Kevin de Bruyne to bolster their midfield ranks, meaning the likes of Samir Nasri and Jesus Navas could be looking at a season on the bench.
Mangala though has fired a warning to the youngsters that they must perform, or face being cut from the starting eleven.
“It [the competition] is the same with every player,” he added.
“We bought Kevin De Bruyne, we bought Raheem Sterling, so it is the same for the forwards. They know they must perform because if they do not they will be replaced.”
