Newcastle are still looking for their first Premier League win of the 2015/16 campaign, after throwing away a two goal lead against Chelsea in their most recent outing, but the Spanish striker has seen some positive signs.
He said to the Chronicle that after a 0-0 draw with Manchester United earlier in the season, he was telling other members of the Magpies' squad about the quality they possess, and his opinion on their current team has not changed.
"I remember three games again after Arsenal and even after Old Trafford, saying, ‘Boys, we’ve got a team in here.
“It might not start to win yet, it might take a while, but we have got a team in here.
“That’s the standard.”
Newcastle impressed against Chelsea, but their fragile confidence was exposed at the end of the match, as they conceded two late goals.
The Magpies had shown great fight to take a two goal lead in the fixture, but when Chelsea put them under pressure they crumbled.
The draw does provide Steve McClaren with a foundation to build upon in future weeks, though, as Newcastle look to climb the table.
At the moment the North East side are in 19th place in the Premier League table, and their schedule does not get any easier - with a match against Manchester City next up.
