Newcastle United failed to win on Saturday evening, but they did show some encouraging signings.
The Magpies headed into the Premier League game against Chelsea at home on the back of a 1-0 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday at St. James’ Park in the third round of the League Cup.
The odds were against Newcastle, but the hosts raised their game and played out a 2-2 draw with defending Premier League champions Chelsea.
Steve McClaren’s side took the lead three minutes before the half-time interval when Ayoze Perez made the most of a lapse by Kurt Zouma.
The hosts doubled their advantage on the hour mark through Georginio Wijnaldum, but Chelsea launched a comeback and scored twice thereafter.
Ramires halved the deficit for Chelsea with a 25-yard strike in the 79th minute, and on 86 minutes Willian equalised when his free kick from the left sailed straight in.
Although Newcastle allowed Jose Mourinho's side to stage a comeback, the players showed that they can play much better than they have been in recent weeks.
