Newcastle played out a 2-2 draw with the Blues at St. James’ Park in the Premier League.
The Magpies took the lead three minutes before the half-time interval when Ayoze Perez made the most of a lapse by Kurt Zouma.
The home team doubled their advantage on the hour mark through Georginio Wijnaldum, but Chelsea launched a comeback and scored twice thereafter.
Ramires halved the deficit for Chelsea with a 25-yard strike in the 79th minute, and on 86 minutes Willian equalised when his free kick from the left sailed straight in.
Former Newcastle goalkeeper Harper was following the match, and he was impressed with the performance of Steve McClaren’s side.
Much better from @NUFC. Worked hard & much more positive especially in the first half. Tough game next weekend but some good signs today!!— Stephen Harper (@steveharper37) September 26, 2015
Over the course of the 90 minutes at St. James’ Park, hosts Newcastle had 35% of the possession, took 11 shots of which five were on target, and earned four corners.
The Magpies are still second from bottom in the Premier League table, but their performance and the final result against Chelsea will give encouragement to the fans.
