Report: Sherwood targets German stopper as Guzan replacement

Brad Guzan

The Aston Villa boss is still reportedly looking to replace the 31-year-old.

Aston Villa head coach Tim Sherwood this week sent his chief scout to watch Mainz goalkeeper Loris Karius in action, according to the Sunday People.

Indeed, the Villa boss is said to still want to replace current no.1 Brad Guzan - and he reportedly sees the German shot stopper as the ideal successor.

The People report that the 22-year-old is a prime target for Sherwood and co, with Guzan's place at Villa Park under threat as a result.

Brad Guzan Aston Villa 9 90
Hugo Lloris Tottenham 7 90
Kasper Schmeichel Leicester 6 90
Adrián West Ham 5 90
Jack Butland Stoke 5 90

As Opta stats show, no goalkeeper made more saves than the Aston Villa man in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon, with Guzan making more stops than the likes of Hugo Lloris, Kasper Schmeichel and more.

Replacing the American, meanwhile, could prove another Sherwood mistake - in that the Villa boss has already changed far too much far too soon at Villa Park with his gung-ho transfer policy.

That said, Guzan did receive plenty of criticism last season, while Aston Villa have struggled this term. But, if Sherwood does go ahead with any move, he'd better ensure Karius is actually an upgrade.
