Perez, Mbabu, Sissoko and Mbemba react to Newcastle's 2-2 draw with Chelsea

St James Park Four

Newcastle United and Chelsea played out an eventful 2-2 draw this weekend.

For a time on Saturday it looked as though Newcastle United had turned the corner in dramatic fashion, defeating reigning Premier League champions Chelsea at St James’ Park.

Ultimately that was not to be, with the Magpies pegged back after Ayoze Perez and Georginio Wijnaldum had earlier put Steve McClaren’s side 2-0 up.

Ramires and Willian scored twice in the last 11 minutes to ensure Chelsea headed back to London with a point, but that should take nothing away from a Newcastle side that looked a cut above the team that had previously struggled to just two points this season.

After the match some of Newcastle’s players took to Twitter to have their say on the outcome, including summer signing Chancel Mbemba, goal-scorer Ayoze Perez, midfielder Mousa Sissoko and league debutants Kevin Mbabu and Ivan Toney.

“Very unlucky to draw tonight but I’m really happy to make my league debut…” Mbabu wrote. “Fans were unbelievable tonight.”

Perez – who is a regular on social media both before and after games – wrote, “Great team effort. We deserved more than a point. Thanks to all the fans, your support was amazing.”

The young forward was right – Newcastle did deserve to finish the game with all three points – but hopefully this performance is the catalyst to kick-start their season.
