It was however a game in which the scoreline did not fairly reflect the performance. Leeds actually played quite well for much of the game but the issue was defensive mistakes and sloppy errors.
Giuseppe Bellusci’s hideous own goal was just the tip of that iceberg.
That credit was indeed given to the Leeds team by a former Whites player.
Adam Clayton was with Leeds for two seasons earlier in his career before finding his way to Boro v a stint at Huddersfield Town.
He was the man of the match in the game and told Sky Sports afterwards that Leeds made them work for the win and also praised his current and former fans:
“No far from straightforward today. I’ve never had cramp in my life! They passed the ball really well today and they caused us quite a few problems, probably more than others do here (Riverside).
“So it was a very tough game. Obviously we got a great start and the own goal set us up to not lose. A very tough game, three points and seven on the spin.
“They’re a good set of fans, so are the Boro fans. It was a lively encounter with some tough tackles. It was played in good spirit and in the end it was a good win for us.”
Leeds fans would certainly like to have Clayton in their midfield at the moment. The 26-year-old has been one of the star performers in the Championship this season and last and looks set to drive the Teesiders toward potential promotion to the Premier League.
