Former Chelsea defender Van Aanholt has been in disappointing form for Sunderland so far this season, and he struggled to cope with the Manchester United attackers at Old Trafford on Saturday.
As expected, United eased past the Black Cats 3-0 at home in the Premier League encounter, with Memphis Depay, Wayne Rooney and Juan Mata scoring the goals.
Netherlands international left-back Van Aanholt started the match and played for the entire 90 minutes.
Former Sunderland striker Gabbiadini was not pleased with the performance of the 25-year-old and criticised him for his role in United’s third goal on Twitter.
If I'd turned my back like Van Aanholt for 3rd goal Arthur Cox would have had all the lads smashing balls at me in training @SunderlandAFC— Marco Gabbiadini (@marco_ten) September 26, 2015
One player Gabbiadini seems to rate highly is Newcastle United forward Ivan Toney.
The 19-year-old joined the Magpies from Northampton Town in the summer transfer window and made his debut against Chelsea at St. James’ Park on Saturday evening.
The teenager came on as a substitute for Aleksandar Mitrovic in the 85th minute, as Newcastle played out a 2-2 draw with the Blues in the Premier League encounter.
