Newcastle played out a 2-2 draw with the Blues at St. James’ Park in the Premier League.
The hosts doubled their advantage on the hour mark through Georginio Wijnaldum, but Chelsea launched a comeback and scored twice thereafter.
Ramires halved the deficit for Chelsea with a 25-yard strike in the 79th minute, and on 86 minutes Willian equalised when his free kick from the left sailed straight in.
Former Newcastle striker Cole was following the match, and he was impressed with the performance of the home team’s players.
The former Manchester United star also chose 22-year-old forward Perez as his ‘Man of the Match’.
“That was some comeback by Chelsea & that's what champions do - to leave with a point is a massive plus for them,” Cole wrote on Breathesport.com.
“Steve McClaren would have been thinking this was going to be his first 3 points of the season. Nevertheless, it was a big improvement from NUFC's midweek display.
“The players played with passion & commitment and that's what the fans want & need to see. Perez my Man of the Match.”
Perez started the Premier League encounter against Chelsea and played for the entire 90 minutes.
The 22-year-old forward took three shots, had a pass accuracy of 71%, created two chances, put in two crosses, attempted 10 dribbles, won 100% of his tackles, and made one clearance and three blocks.
