The one simple reason why Nottingham Forest will sign no more loan players

Alex Iwobi

The Reds already have five players on loan, the most that can be named in a matchday Championship squad.

The emergency loan window may well still be open and it is being reported and rumoured that Nottingham Forest might be making a move for yet another loan signing.

The club have done well in the loan market this summer. They have had to scrape for signings under a transfer embargo but once Michail Antonio was sold to West Ham they moved quickly to bring in plenty of loanees.

Now they are being linked with more, including an emergency loan deal for Alex Iwobi of Arsenal.

But why will this deal, or any other loan deal, not happen at Forest in the coming weeks?

They simply do not have room for one.

The Reds currently have five players at the club on short-term deals.

Ryan Mendes is at the club from Lille, Nelson Oliveira recently arrived from Benfica, Kyle Ebecilio is being borrowed from FC Twente while Chris O’Grady and Jonathan Williams are the two domestic loanees – in from Brighton and Hove Albion and Crystal Palace respectively.

The problem would be the rules governing loan players in a match-day squad. Forest are only allowed five to be involved in any Championship fixtures, as per the guidelines from the FA, meaning one more signing would mean having one of their loanees missing out every week.

It would make little sense to bring another in and the likelihood is, Forest are done in regards to recruitment this loan window.
