The Benin striker was brought in as a replacement for Liverpool newbie Christian Benteke.
However Liverpool could have had an easier team to take on given their recent record against Aston Villa. The Midlands club have picked up some decent recent results against Liverpool, including a win the FA Cup semi-final last season.
Luckily for Liverpool the catalyst for much of those performances is now theirs. Liverpool snapped up Christian Benteke from Villa this summer and although he will not be featuring today because of a hamstring injury, his absence for Villa must have Liverpool fans pleased.
However one Liverpool defender believes that Villa have a suitable replacement. Villa snapped up Rudy Gestede from Blackburn Rovers this summer for a fee reported by Sky Sports to be in the region of £6 million.
Skrtel told the Liverpool site:
“He’s similar to Christian. He’s a physical player – a big, strong lad – and is very dangerous in the box, so we have to be steady and look after him for 90 minutes.
“If you leave him space, he’s able to score – but it's not only him, they have plenty of other players who are dangerous. We will try to play our game and get the three points."
Of course that would require Gestede to start the game.
The Benin international has not been a regular starter since his move but considering his similarities to the former scourge of Liverpool maybe Tim Sherwood will throw him into the starting XI tonight, especially considering the way he roughed up Liverpool in an FA Cup tie last season.
