The 25-year-old has been dubbed a 'liability' by frustrated supporters.
It doesn't get much worse for Sunderland fans. After seeing their side lose for the umpteenth time - and well beaten, at that - supporters also had to watch Newcastle United register a point that lifts them above the Black Cats in the Premier League table.
Granted, Newcastle's late collapse would have been a source of satisfaction. But the Magpies' 2-2 draw with Chelsea ultimately means one thing: that Sunderland are now on their own rock bottom of the league standings.
Yes, Dick Advocaat's men were traveling to Old Trafford to face Manchester United, who just so happen to now top the standings after hammering the Black Cats 3-0.
But you'd think they'd at least try their hardest to shut up shop, that being the case. Instead, Sunderland were yet again all over the place defensively. And, while the usual suspects - Younes Kaboul chief among them - got plenty of blame, Patrick van Aanholt appeared to infuriate supporters the most.
Here's how Sunderland fans reacted on Twitter to the 25-year-old's performance at Manchester United - with most of them dubbing him a 'liability'...
Van Aanholt literally just does what he wants. He's got the useless roaming LB position sussed #SAFC— Dan Talbot (@Danny_Tal) September 26, 2015
van Aanholt isn't a left back, he's a left winger. Wasted at LB and a liability to be honest #SAFC— Daniel (@DanMeister1234) September 26, 2015
Honestly man, Van Aanholt must be responsible for about 75% of the goals we concede. Anywhere but where he needs to be #safc— Tom Albrighton (@TMALBRGHTN) September 26, 2015
Van Aanholt keeps running in to trouble when a simple pass would prevent it #SAFC— Mark Wilson (@MarkA_Wilson) September 26, 2015
