The Frenchman has been in great form for West Ham this season.
The 28-year-old has had an excellent start to his Hammers career – scoring three goals in six Premier League appearances for the club.
It is not just his goal record that has impressed. His overall play has been superb and he seems to be perfectly suited to the Premier League.
Today he has been speaking to the official West Ham site about his move to London, and just what convinced him to make the switch.
He mentioned the success of French players in the Premier League, but also mentioned that Joe Cole – a former West Ham youngster – played a big role in his decision.
“Of course the success of French players here in England helped me to make my decision to come. The Premier League and Spain’s La Liga have always been the standout leagues for me and there were opportunities for me to move here previously, but I didn’t feel ready. Now, I am here and I feel ready to be here.
“I played with Joe Cole at Lille and he spoke to me about West Ham and his personal attachment to the Club and now I am here I can understand that very well.”
Cole was of course a West Ham youngster, playing with the club for nine years and then re-joined the club in 2013. Nowadays he is with Aston Villa and played with Payet during a season on loan in France at Lille in 2011-12.
It seems that West Ham fans might have their former talent to thank in part for Payet’s decision to head to Upton Park.
