The Spaniard is back at his beloved Celta Vigo and in top form.
On Wednesday night Barcelona were put to the sword by Celta Vigo. The Spanish outfit ran out comfortable 4-1 winners against the reigning champions with one former Liverpool name doing the bulk of the damage.
Iago Aspas bagged two goals in the game, including a delightful chip, to score his first goals at home since returning to his former club.
After the game he spoke about that move, and how it was the feeling of being loved that brought him back to Vigo.
He is quoted by Inside Spanish Football as saying:
“The two goals will give me confidence because I haven’t been able to score at Balaidos. I feel very loved here with my fans, which is what I was looking for when I decided to come back to Celta.”
Of course he never quite got that love at Anfield.
According to the Guardian, Liverpool paid Celta Vigo a fee in the region of £7.7 million for his services in June 2013 but Aspas struggled in England.
The physical nature of English football did not agree with Aspas who only managed 15 games and one goal for Liverpool in 2013-14 before being shipped out on loan to Sevilla last season.
Now he is back at his beloved Celta and whilst Liverpool toiled in the League Cup v Carlisle he was tearing into Lionel Messi’s Barcelona.
It’s a funny old game.
