Don Hutchison makes a valid point about Newcastle and Sunderland on Twitter

Steve McClaren

Newcastle United went down to Sheffield Wednesday, while Sunderland lost to Manchester City in the League Cup in midweek.

Don Hutchison has suggested on social networking site Twitter that Sunderland and Newcastle United should have fielded their strongest teams in the League Cup in midweek.

Both Newcastle and Sunderland failed to progress to the fourth round of the League Cup, losing to Sheffield Wednesday and Manchester City respectively in the third round of the competition.

While the Magpies went down 1-0 to Wednesday at St. James’ Park, the Black Cats suffered a 4-1 defeat to Premier League rivals City at the Stadium of Light.

Former West Ham United and Sunderland midfielder Hutchison has criticised the team selection of Steve McClaren and Dick Advocaat on Twitter.

Although the League Cup is generally seen by Premier League clubs as a competition to give chances to youngsters, Hutchison is right.

Newcastle and Sunderland are both struggling in the league, and they needed a positive result in the League Cup.

Fielding their best available teams would have given them a better chance of winning, but neither McClaren nor Advocaat did that.
