Sergio Aguero has revealed the player who he views as the best midfielder he has ever played alongside, and the answer could surprise some Manchester City fans.
The Sky Blues boast one of the strongest midfield contingents in the Premier League, with Manuel Pellegrini able to call upon the likes of Yaya Toure, David Silva and new boy Kevin De Bruyne, among others.
However, Aguero ranks a Champions League winner with experience of the English top-flight above all of the big names on offer at the Etihad.
Speaking during a live Q&A on the UEFA.com Facebook page, the Argentine was asked to name the best midfielder he has ever played with.
“Javier Mascherano,” he said.
“Because I think he is a player who feels the pulse of a game – he knows the moment when it's going well or badly. He is a reference point for what you need on the pitch.”
Mascherano was with Liverpool for just over three-and-a-half seasons before sealing a move to Barcelona.
Since then he has won three La Liga titles and two European Cups, as well as starring in the Argentina team that reached the final of the 2014 World Cup.
Aguero played alongside the midfielder at those finals and at last summer’s Copa America, where the Albiceleste once again fell short with defeat to hosts Chile in the final.
Despite their obvious bond, however, Aguero’s comments could still be of interest to Toure, Silva and the rest of the Manchester City squad.
