Would Jack Rodwell at centre-back be a master-stroke from Dick Advocaat?

Jack Rodwell

Sunderland have been woeful defensively this season.

It is being reported this morning that Sunderland boss Dick Advocaat isn’t giving serious thought to the idea of playing Jack Rodwell at the heart of Sunderland’s defence.

The Sunderland Echo reports that the former Everton man may be asked to play at the back – a position he first came to prominence at during his time with Everton.

Sunderland have struggled at the back this season – with Younes Kaboul and Sebastian Coates both putting in some wretched displays.

So Rodwell appears to be an option,

Could it be a master-stroke?

There are those who will tell you that when Rodwell was at Everton his best position was in fact always at the heart of defence.

He is physically perfect for the role. Strong in the air and composed on the ball, he would also add some much needed pace to the back and hopefully see calamity Kaboul watching from the sidelines.

He has struggled in the midfield for Sunderland and it seems as though his injury history has made him unfit for purpose higher up the field.

Reverting back to the back could be perfect for him and Sunderland.
