The Hammers currently sit in third place in the Premier League table, but Slaven Bilic has told the official West Ham website that there is no point guessing where the East London club could finish in the league this season.
Bilic said: “We’re not looking too far ahead, we’re thinking about September and October. We don’t want to look too far ahead or think about where we might finish in the table, it is too early for that.”
The Hammers are riding high so far this term, but Bilic is correct to only look to the month ahead, rather than already suggesting how high his side can finish at the end of the campaign.
Last season is the perfect example of why Bilic needs to stay focused on the next game, with West Ham having started the season so well, only to drop off and finish in 12th place.
Under Sam Allardyce, they were inside the top four at Christmastime, but a failure to keep up their solid form saw them drop away and hardly win a game in the second half of the season.
Bilic wants to ensure the same thing does not happen this time around, despite impressive victories over Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City. They have proven they have the ability to defeat the best teams in the league, and fans seriously believe the Hammers can fight for a European finish this season.
However, the head coach is staying focused on the upcoming games, and although fans may start to dream of a top four, Bilic’s approach makes that kind of finish all the more likely.
