Rudy Gestede aiming to emulate John Carew at Aston Villa

Aston Villa striker Rudy Gestede has scored two goals in his first seven appearances for the Claret and Blues.

Rudy Gestede has told Aston Villa's official website that he is hoping to emulate John Carew during his time at the club.

Carew became a fans' favourite at Villa Park due to the nature of his performances, where he would dominate opposition defences with his physicality.

The Norwegian international spent four years at Villa, scoring 37 times in 113 appearances, and Gestede is aiming to enjoy a similarly productive spell in the Midlands.

"John Carew had a very good career," he said. "He was a very tough, strong striker. It is a nice comparison - I would like to say thank you to Gabby Agbonlahor for comparing me with John Carew!

"If I have a career like his - and have his popularity - I will be very happy. Strikers in the past have been successful at Villa and I hope to follow the same path.

"I know that number nine style player has been very popular with the fans of this club. Hopefully I will follow that lead and have a similar impact."

Gestede arrived at Villa this summer from Blackburn Rovers, and so far most of his appearances have come as a substitute.

He was handed a start against Birmingham City in midweek, though, and his winning goal in the derby fixture will have endeared himself to the Villa fan base.

Gestede will now be aiming to get a run of games in the Claret and Blues first-team, and add to his total of two goals in his first seven games.

The target-man should be confident of doing that, too, having scored 22 times for Blackburn in the Championship over the course of the 2014/15 campaign.
