Michael Gray names six players who would improve Sunderland if signed, featuring West Ham duo

Sunderland should sign West Ham, Liverpool, Stoke and Reading players, according to former Black Cats and Celtic player Michael Gray.

Taking to his personal Twitter account, Sunderland legend Michael Gray has named six players the Black Cats should sign to improve their squad, all who would be affordable for the Wearside club.

James Collins and Matt Jarvis are both contracted to West Ham, although the latter is currently on loan at Norwich, whilst Joe Allen is contracted to Liverpool. Jonathan Walters turns out for Stoke, Nick Blackman is with Reading, and Marcos Alonso, formerly of Bolton, stars with Fiorentina in Serie A.

Alonso had a spell with the Black Cats in 2014, impressing during a loan stay at the Stadium of Light, when he played 16 games.

Gray believes these six players would all improve Dick Advocaat’s current squad, and, more importantly, they would all be affordable for the Black Cats to sign.

None of the players listed are world beaters, but all of them, aside from Blackman, are proven in the Premier League to a good level. Blackman has impressed in the Championship, but only has 11 games worth of experience in the top flight.

Gray’s opinion is a damning indictment of Sunderland’s current team, if he believes six players are needed to improve the side, and it would come as no surprise to see the Black Cats scrambling about in the January transfer window looking to sign a number of new players, as they attempt to secure their Premier League survival once again.
