Former Sunderland man Don Hutchison was less than impressed by Newcastle United's showing in their 1-0 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday in the Capital One Cup.
Don Hutchison has told Channel 5 that Newcastle United put in an 'embarrassing' performance against Sheffield Wednesday in the Capital One Cup on Wednesday evening.
Wednesday ran out 1-0 winners at St. James' Park, with Lewis McGugan grabbing the winner on the night, and it is a result which heaps further pressure on Steve McClaren's men.
With Newcastle stating their intentions to go on a cup run this year - Mike Ashley telling Sky Sports as much back in May - the display was hugely disappointing, and Hutchison believes it was a major missed opportunity for the club.
"Mike Ashley said he wanted a cup run this year, yet Sheffield Wednesday have rocked up, made 10 changes, and won comfortably," he fumed. "They've got Chelsea at the weekend and I thought it was an ideal time, when you haven't won in the league, to get a win tonight. That would have got the Geordie fans back on side, and they could have gone into the Chelsea game full of confidence. Instead, they got beat comfortably. It was an embarrassing performance."
Newcastle named a fairly strong line-up for the fixture, but their usual problems remained, even though Wednesday put out a number of fringe players in their team.
The Owls limited the Magpies' chances and capitalised on some weak goalkeeping from Tim Krul to win the match.
It means that McClaren's only victory during his time at Newcastle so far has come against League Two outfit Northampton Town, and his position at the club is looking increasingly vulnerable.
The Mapgies now go into a tough set of Premier League fixtures, where they face Chelsea, Manchester City and Norwich City, before taking in a derby date with local rivals Sunderland.
