Don Hutchison says Newcastle and Sunderland must not sack managers... despite struggles

The former Sunderland midfielder and life-long Newcastle United fan has been discussing the plight of both clubs.

Former Sunderland midfielder and life-long Newcastle fan Don Hutchison feels the Tyne-Wear clubs should not sack their managers despite terrible starts to the Premier League.

Indeed, the player turned pundit believes Steve McClaren and Dick Advocaat should at least be given until Christmas to turn things around at their respective clubs.

The Black Cats sit rock bottom of the top flight, having also been knocked out of the Capital One Cup this week. The Magpies are just a place above them, having lost to Sheffield Wednesday in the League Cup.

McClaren's start at Newcastle has raised the serious question of whether it's already time to consider his job at St James' Park.

There's always the argument to give a manager time but, sometimes, it's clear as day they just aren't going to work out. The fact the former England boss also presided over a terrible run of form at Derby County before taking over at Newcastle similarly counts against him.

For Sunderland boss Advocaat, it seems a little different. The Dutchman's career record sees the positives far outweigh the negatives, while he will also be remembered well by Sunderland fans for the manner in which he kept the club up last term.
