Sunderland fans react on Twitter to DeAndre Yedlin debut

The on-loan Tottenham Hotspur defender impressed on his first appearance on Tuesday night.

Tuesday night’s 4-1 loss to Manchester City in the League Cup didn’t provide many positives for a Sunderland side currently rooted to the bottom of the Premier League table, but the debut of DeAndre Yedlin was certainly one.

The 22-year old offered a constant threat down the right flank and his eye-catching display has given Dick Advocaat a decision to make ahead of Saturday's clash with Manchester United.

The USA international’s electric pace was on full display throughout, but it was the quality of his deliveries that came as more of a surprise, and first-choice Billy Jones now faces a real fight to keep his place.

Several pinpoint crosses were sent into dangerous areas, and one such ball was dispatched by Ola Toivonen to give the Black Cats some consolation late on, and Yedlin a debut assist.

Goals from Sergio Aguero, Kevin De Bruyne, Raheem Sterling and an unfortunate own goal for Vito Mannone put the league leaders into an unassailable lead in the first half, before Toivonen’s glancing header in the 83rd minute pulled one back.

In a night that failed to give the Sunderland faithful much to shout about, the performance of their debutant proved a source of solace on Twitter:
