Newcastle boss Steve McClaren hails in-form Daryl Janmaat

The Magpies welcome Sheffield Wednesday in the League Cup tonight.

Newcastle United boss Steve McClaren has, in the Chronicle, heaped praise on right-back Daryl Janmaat after his excellent form in recent weeks.

The Dutchman has been one of few positives during a dismal run, and has been the Magpies' most threatening attacking outlet in the last two games.

He was dismissed against Swansea City in the second game of the season but has been the standout performer since his return, and McClaren would love to have more like him in the team.

“He’s (Janmaat’s) been fantastic,” said the Newcastle manager, in quotes published by the Chronicle.

“He epitomises exactly what everyone wants to see.

“Every team needs 11 of that kind of character, so he’s probably the first one who came to me and said I want to play (against Wednesday)… Great! Let’s hope the rest follow suit.”

Newcastle face Sheffield Wednesday in the League Cup tonight and will be grateful for some respite from what has been a tough start in the Premier League.

The Magpies are yet to pick up their first win and are only spared last position in the table due to a marginally superior goal difference to North East rivals Sunderland.

Chelsea and Manchester City are up next in the league, so tonight’s clash with Championship opposition Wednesday is a chance to gain some much-needed confidence ahead of those most difficult of tests.
