Judging by their team selection, Manchester City are definitely taking the League Cup seriously, and their first half performance against Sunderland also supports that theory - as big hitters such as Sergio Aguero, Yaya Toure, Kevin De Bruyne and Raheem Sterling all featured for the Premier League leaders at the Stadium of Light.
It may have been a simple exercise in trying to put the disappointment of a defeat to West Ham United from the weekend behind them, something they seemed to achieve given goals from Aguero [via the penalty spot] De Bruyne, Sterling, and a bit of help from Vito Mannone saw them 4-0 up at the interval.
The Black Cats - whose head coach Dick Advocaat was hoping to get more of an idea about his best XI - managed to pull one back in the closing stages when Ola Toivonen headed home a cross from DeAndre Yedlin. Removing a potential distraction perhaps allows them to focus more on trying to survive in the Premier League, having only picked up two points from their opening six games.
Other than the action on the field, things got a little lively off it, with a couple of pitch invaders seemingly cheering up an otherwise desperate home crowd.
