Things are starting to look very bleak indeed for Steve McClaren...
Alan Shearer took to Twitter with a light-hearted joke that symbolised a much darker time for Steve McClaren on Wednesday night.
Indeed, Newcastle United were losing to Sheffield Wednesday in the Capital One Cup at the time and, after all the talk of cup glory and pleading for patience from fans, the St James' Park outfit were dumped out of a cup yet again..
And this, of course, was against Championship opposition.
When was the last time McClaren won a game against a Premier League or Championship side?
The desperation from Newcastle fans is already palpable but all the coach seems to be doing is smiling and declaring that his players aren't all that bad.
As such, one fan tweeted Shearer that he would even welcome him back as manager with the Magpies (he was in charge at the end of the season when Newcastle were relegated to the second tier).
He also joked that his nan could do a better job - and Shearer asked what she's doing this Saturday.
What's she doing on Saturday? https://t.co/AgWQJZCzws— Alan Shearer (@alanshearer) September 23, 2015
@alanshearer come back all is forgiven! Me granny could do a better job than this bloke and this shower!!!!— lee major (@MajorManor) September 23, 2015
Shearer then went on to declare that facing Sheffield Wednesday at home was a good draw for McClaren's men. The pressure will now really be on the Newcastle boss.
