Ross Wallace has suggested to the Sheffield Telegraph that Carlos Carvalhal could name a changed line-up for Sheffield Wednesday's match against Newcastle United in the Capital One Cup.
Wednesday face Newcastle at St. James' Park with little pressure on them, with the Yorkshire side the outsiders to make it through.
It means that Carvalhal has an ideal opportunity to experiment with his squad, and Wallace has suggested that the Portuguese boss will ring the changes in midweek.
“I’m sure the manager will change the team around and the boys will have to come in and perform," the attacking midfielder, who claimed a trio of assists in Wednesday's most recent outing against Fulham, said. "Hopefully we will take the momentum we got against Fulham into Wednesday.”
The Owls have a massive squad this season, following a busy summer where they added a number of players, so Carvalhal will be keen to test out some of his fringe players.
So far, Wednesday have named youthful line-ups against Mansfield Town and Oxford United in the Capital One Cup, but their back-up performers will be given a more challenging time by Newcastle.
It is a test that they will be keen to pass, though, as the competition for places in the Owls' squad is fierce.
Two of the players who could start in the fixture are Lucas Joao and Lewis McGugan, with both struggling for first-team opportunities so far this season.
