Liverpool v Carlisle United: League Cup match preview, predicted line-ups

Anfield Night

Liverpool are desperate to return to winning ways, while Carlisle will be hoping to pull off a stunning upset.

This game perhaps has more significance for Liverpool than they would have thought earlier on in the season, as they are without a win in their last five games in all competitions.

They are heavy favourites going into this week's League Cup tie against Carlisle United and Brendan Rodgers desperately needs the win - and a big win in order for some fresh life to be breathed into their season as the pressure continues to mount on the Liverpool manager.

He is expected to make several changes to the side that was held to a 1-1 draw by Norwich City at the weekend. Christian Benteke will miss out with a hamstring injury, while Daniel Sturridge may retain his place in order to get some match fitness. It's unclear whether Kolo Toure will be available after picking up a knock in last week's Europa League draw with Bordeaux in France.

There could also be room for Joe Allen to make a return to the starting XI after missing the start of the season through injury, in terms of getting some game time under his belt. The question is whether Rodgers will have one eye on the Premier League game against Aston Villa or whether he will select a strong XI against the League Two outfit in order to get the result he and his side so desperately needs.

Carlisle United will enjoy the pressure-free environment and the occasion of playing at Anfield, as they look to cause a huge upset and get a huge feather in their caps. They have made a modest start to the season, currently sat in 10th place in League Two, but they have conceded more goals than any other side in the division, so it would be foolish to think they are going to arrive on Merseyside and just stick 10 men behind the ball and hope to snatch a winner on the break.

They will, however, look to avoid repeating the mistakes they made at the weekend, when they were seemingly comfortable on their visit to York City - with a two-goal lead and a man advantage - only for them to concede twice in the space of two minutes to allow their opponents to snatch a point.

Carlisle have done well to get to this point of the competition, after dumping Queens Park Rangers out of the competition in the previous round at Loftus Road.
