Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher said on the Live Ford Super Sunday show on Sky Sports 1 on Sunday afternoon that Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld is similar to him.
The former Liverpool defender said that, like him, Alderweireld is a versatile player and claimed that his best position is at centre-back.
“I think so,” said Carragher when asked if Alderweireld's best position is at centre-back on the Live Ford Super Sunday show on Sky Sports 1 in the build-up to the Premier League game between Tottenham and Crystal Palace at White Hart Lane on Sunday afternoon.
“He is similar to myself. When you get to that age, 25, 26, you really want to cement that position. I played in a lot of positions until I was that age."
Alderweireld joined Tottenham from Spanish club Atletico Madrid in the summer transfer window, having played on loan at Southampton last season.
The Belgium international showed during the 2014-15 campaign that he is of Premier League quality and also demonstrated his versatility.
The former Ajax star was one of the best players for the Saints last season, scoring one goal and creating seven chances in 26 league appearances.
Alderweireld had a pass accuracy of 80% and a shot accuracy of 58%, and he won 37 headers, seven dribbles and 35 tackles.
The 26-year-old, who can play at right-back or in midfield, has been featuring at centre-back for Tottenham alongside his former Ajax teammate Jan Vertonghen.
The Belgian has created one chance, has a pass accuracy of 84%, and has won eight headers and three tackles in six Premier League matches for Tottenham so far this campaign.
