Aston Villa fans react on Twitter to Jordan Ayew's performance against Birmingham

The 24-year-old striker came off the bench at half-time to help the hosts record a 1-0 derby victory in the third round of the Capital One Cup.

Jordan Ayew finally showed Aston Villa his worth in Tuesday night’s clash with Birmingham City, producing a game-changing showing off the bench to help Tim Sherwood’s side beat their bitter rivals 1-0 in the third round of the Capital One Cup.

The 24-year-old former Lorient striker had only made three starts in four goalless appearances for the club prior to the Blues bout but he proceeded to show clear glimpses of the talent that Villa paid around £8.5 million for in the summer following his half-time introduction.

Brought on alongside Jack Grealish with the scoreline deadlocked at 0-0, the French-born Ghanaian and his fledgling teammate transformed the hosts from a sputtering side to a much more menacing outfit over the course of the second period, as the pair wreaked havoc around the attacking third with their pace, direct running, passing and movement.

Rudy Gestede’s 62nd-minute header from a Jordan Amavi cross ultimately proved enough to send Villa through to the next round of the competition but the two substitutes deserved much of the credit for helping change the tide of the match.

In Ayew’s case, his 45-minute run-out will have certainly done his confidence the world of good after his initial struggles in the Midlands and Sherwood will have to think about bringing him into the side for the weekend’s trip to Liverpool now amid the club's worst-ever start to a Premier League campaign.

With older brother Andre currently starring for Swansea City, plenty of people having been mocking Villa of late for signing the wrong sibling but, if his latest performance was a sign of things to come, then supporters will not end up too disappointed.

Here is a sampling of what the claret and blue faithful on Twitter made of his encouraging showing…
