Spain international goalkeeper De Gea started the Premier League game at St. Mary’s Stadium and played for the entire 90 minutes, as United won 3-2.
France international forward Anthony Martial stole the headlines with his two goals, but De Gea’s performance did not go unnoticed.
The 24-year-old goalkeeper made as many as eight saves, the best of which came on the hour mark when he kept out a flicked header from Jose Fonte with his left hand from point-blank range.
Former United striker Owen, who was watching the match, was impressed with the save made by his former teammate and raved about him on Twitter:
What a save. Certain people hammered De Gea when he first signed. Now they have the front to heap praise on him. https://t.co/FdTdt5TIPa— michael owen (@themichaelowen) September 20, 2015
"What a save De Gea - the best signing Man Utd have made this season!!" http://t.co/ssnUdTuzh9— Philip Neville (@fizzer18) September 20, 2015
United are second in the Premier League table at the moment with 13 points from six matches, just two points behind leaders Manchester City.
