The Baggies secured a 1-0 victory over their local rivals Aston Villa on Saturday, and Darren Fletcher has told the official club website that the performance set the standard West Brom must replicate for the rest of the campaign.
Fletcher said: “This is the standard that we need to set for ourselves now. This is the way the manager wants us to play. We've been finding it hard to strike that balance between keeping clean sheets and being defensively solid but also being a threat. But I think we struck that balance perfectly at Villa.”
The Baggies defeated Villa thanks to a goal from Saido Berahino, who looks back to his best following the issues surrounding his future at the Hawthorns.
However, whilst his brilliance stole the show, it was actually a well rounded team performance, and the first time this season that Tony Pulis’ men have managed to possess an attacking threat whilst still being solid defensively.
Fletcher has admitted that the Baggies have struggled so far this term trying to find the balance between defence and attack, but they put in a rounded performance against Aston Villa.
They managed 11 shots, of which six were on target, whilst only allowing Villa to hit the target themselves three times. The Baggies were loss dominant in the game, ceding possession to their opponents and registering a lower pass accuracy, but then they were more incisive when they had the ball.
In all it was the perfect performance by a side managed by Tony Pulis, and now that West Brom have reached this level, Fletcher has urged his teammates to replicate this ‘standard’ for the remainder of the Premier League season.
