Costa has attracted widespread criticism for his antics against the Gunners, with the Spain international guilty of lashing out at Laurent Kocielny as well as clashing with Gabriel.
The latter of the Arsenal pair went to ground after receiving a push from Costa and was given his marching orders soon after, having kicked out at the Chelsea striker in front of the referee.
It proved to be the turning point in the game with the Blues eventually winning 2-0 thanks in no small part to their numerical advantage.
But despite Costa coming under fire for his on-the-pitch antics against Arsenal, it's important to note that there is some previous between the fiery Pensioners star and Gabriel.
Rewind to November 2013 and a clash between Villarreal and Atletico Madrid at El Madrigal.
It was here that Costa, then playing for Atleti, and Gabriel, then of the Yellow Submarine, had their first most notable coming together.
With the Rojiblancos leading 1-0 and preparing to take a set-piece, Gabriel went to ground after receiving an, at best, slight elbow in the stomach from Costa.
Evidently attempting to play on Costa's reputation as a troublemaker and most likely to culmination of a lengthy period of back and forth between the pair, the incident nevertheless provides context to proceedings between Chelsea and Arsenal.
Gabriel isn't the only Premier League defender to have beef with the Blues forward either with Tottenham's Federico Fazio having a similarly chequered past where Costa is concerned.
Something tells us this isn't the end of this particular rivalry either, though a reunion between the pair is at least some considerable time off now.
