Phil Thompson says 'dreadful' Papiss Cisse was Newcastle's biggest disappointment

The Sky Sports pundit has lambasted several Newcastle United stars but says the striker tops the lot.

Phil Thompson was full of criticism when it came to Newcastle on Saturday afternoon, according to Sky Sports.

Indeed, the pundit slammed the likes of Georginio Wijnaldum and Florian Thauvin after the Tyneside outfit's 2-1 loss at home to Watford.

But the pundit's biggest disappointment was Papiss Cisse, the 30-year-old striker he feels was 'dreadful' at St James' Park this weekend. Cisse has struggled for form of late and there were no signs of improvement against the Hornets.

Thompson told Sky: "The biggest disappointment is Cisse. I questioned whether he would play, or should play and he was on from the start. He was off at half-time. He was dreadful, he probably had the best [Newcastle] chance besides the goal they scored."

Thompson isn't the first and won't be the last to criticise Cisse this season, with everything from his attitude to his finishing in a Newcastle shirt being questioned.

Inevitably, further questions have been asked of why the Magpies didn't sign Queens Park Rangers striker Charlie Austin, while investing just a little lower than his valuation in the eternally suspended Aleksandar Mitrovic.

But those who have grown tired of such questions can't blame those who ask them when underperformers like Cisse continue to produce such poor displays at St James' Park.

Can the Senegalese striker, along with Newcastle as a whole, turn things around anytime soon?
