This weekend Arsenal take on Chelsea in a crunch Premier League tie. The Gunners, still reeling from defeat to Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League, host the reigning Premier League champions tomorrow in the early afternoon.

One player they would have liked to have available would have been German veteran Per Mertesacker.

The World Cup winner has been out with an illness in recent weeks and yesterday Arsene Wenger confirmed that the defender remained a doubt for the game.

His absence will likely mean either Gabriel or Calum Chambers will slot in alongside the French international defender Laurent Koscielny in the heart of The Gunners’ defence.

However, Wenger did not rule out the possibility of Mertesacker playing, but the German was in training yesterday afternoon.

The 30-year-old was snapped in first-team training yesterday as he continues to step up his recovery from the virus that has kept him out of action for over a month now.

Arsenal fans will just hope that, with or without Mertescaker, the Arsenal defence can keep Chelsea at bay.
