The Sky Sports pundit has criticised the Newcastle United summer signing.
The St James' Park outfit purchased the Frenchman for £12 million, fee as reported by the Daily Mail, but there have already been complaints about what exactly he brings to Tyneside.
Remy Cabella found himself in a similar position last season but Thompson's criticism is perhaps stronger than any that was aimed at Thauvin's predecessor at Newcastle.
Indeed, the pundit feels the 22-year-old has no end product and higlighted several key weaknesses.
Thompson told Sky Sports: "Thauvin he's awful, he just runs with the ball all the time, there's never any end product. He looks very lightweight, and gets pushed off by a lot of physical players. He runs down a lot of blind alleys. There's no sort of creativity from him at all."
Is it too soon to be so highly critical of the Magpies signing?
After six games without a win, especially with Newcastle losing at home to a newly promoted side, there is certainly a need for urgency. And the club's transfer business continues to underwhelm - no matter how much has been spent.
So will Thauvin pull it round or does he represent yet more poor recruitment?
We'll find out in the coming games, with Newcastle facing Sheffield Wednesday in the Capital One Cup before hosting Chelsea in the Premier League.
