Report: Southampton failed to sign Christian Eriksen in 2008 after reaching deal to sign Morgan Schneiderlin

Tottenham star Christian Eriksen could have moved to Southampton in 2008.

According to the Mirror, when Southampton signed Morgan Schneiderlin in 2008, it came at the expense of agreeing a deal for a 16-year-old Christian Eriksen, currently of Spurs.

Eriksen is currently one of the best players in the Premier League, but back in 2008 he was stilly plying his trade in his homeland of Denmark. After starting his career with Middelfart, he them moved to Odense Boldklub, and it was with OB where he started piquing the interest of a number of Europe’s biggest teams.

He completed a move to Ajax in 2008, but it could have been Southampton he signed with, if they hadn’t agreed a deal for Morgan Schneiderlin.

Schneiderlin, now with Manchester United, moved to the Saints from Strasbourg in 2008, and due to the South Coast club’s financial status back then, they could not pay out the required fee for Eriksen.

Southampton were bound for administration when Schneiderlin arrived at the club, and it was probably wise that they did not use their dwindling funds to bring the playmaker to St Mary’s Stadium, regardless of his current abilities.

The Saints may have missed out on Eriksen back in 2008, but it is another sign that Southampton possess one of the greatest scouting networks in current world football.
