Newcastle boss Steve McClaren provides fitness update ahead of Watford game

St James Park

Several squad players are unavailable for selection this weekend.

Steve Mclaren has provided an update on the fitness of several Newcastle United players ahead of Saturday’s clash with Watford in his pre-match press conference, as covered by the club’s official Twitter account.

The Magpies host the Hornets in what has already become a must-win, after their poor start to the season, but they will be without several key men.

Centre-back Stephen Taylor is ruled out with a hamstring injury, while young goalkeeper Karl Darlow will undergo a scan on his ankle after twisting it in training.

Midfield powerhouse Cheick Tiote remains sidelined, but there is better news in the case of French winger Sylvain Marveaux who has now returned to training but is not yet fit enough to feature.

Newcastle’s list of absentees also extends to the suspended Aleksandar Mitrovic and the injured Mike Williamson, Paul Dummet and Emmanuel Riviere – giving Mcclaren an early test of his squad’s depth.

Despite finding himself without the services of a number of players, McClaren is still able to call upon his first-choice players and will have no excuses for a poor performance at St James' Park.
