Slaven Bilic gives insight into the tactical role he intends to give Dimitri Payet at West Ham United

Dimitri Payet's performances since joining West Ham over the summer have won him a host of admirers.

Slaven Bilic has told West Ham United's official website that he intends to continue giving Dimitri Payet the freedom to get into dangerous positions and express himself.

Payet has made a spectacular start to life in the Premier League, with three goals in his first five games, and Bilic says that part of the reason for this is because the Hammers are giving him a role where he can continuously pick the ball up in areas which can hurt opposition teams.

West Ham tend to try and release the Frenchman when he has the opportunity to run at defences, and Bilic feels that teams face the same problems trying to deal with him as they do with the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

"I don't think the other teams would not have been aware of him and they would have been trying to mark him anyway. But he is a good player," Bilic said.

"I am not comparing him to Messi, Ronaldo or [David] Silva, but just as an example all the managers are trying to stop them but they cannot do it as they are great players.

"Dimitri is playing in a position that you have to close down no matter who players there. I think he is going to continue playing like this, especially if the team continue to help him.

"We are trying to make the situations easier for him to get him in a situation where he is one against one and then he has got the quality."

To ensure that Payet can thrive, it will be important that West Ham's attacking outlets continue to work effectively.

The Hammers need to ensure that Payet isn't their only attacking threat, allowing teams to double-up on him, so the role that the likes of Victor Moses, Michail Antonio and Diafra Sakho play cannot be understated.

So far, the forward players that West Ham have at their disposal have been in fine form, and wins over Arsenal and Liverpool on their travels are testament to this.

Those results, combined with a more recent victory over Newcastle United, have pushed the Hammers up into fifth place in the Premier League table, in what has been a highly impressive opening to the new campaign.
