Jermaine Jenas says Arsenal should have signed a central midfielder

The BBC pundit has stated that the Gunners need reinforcement in the heart of their team.

BBC Sport pundit Jermaine Jenas has stated that Arsenal should have signed a new central midfielder over the summer.

The Emirates Stadium outfit slumped to a disappointing 2-1 defeat to Dinamo Zagreb last night, in a poor start to their new Champions League campaign.

A section of the Gunners fans have called out for Arsene Wenger to bolster the side’s options in the centre of midfield, with the North London outfit not having a world-class enforcer in the boiler room since the days of Patrick Vieira.

Jenas has stated that the likes of Manchester United duo Morgan Schneiderlin and Bastian Schweinsteiger would have been good additions for Wenger’s men.

"There were a few holding midfielders around - Morgan Schneiderlin, Sami Khedira and even Bastian Schweinsteiger this sumer,” the ex-Tottenham man told BBC Sport.

“I think that's an area Arsenal should have gone for.”

Arsenal’s first-choice central midfield pairing over the last six months has been Francis Coquelin and Santi Cazorla, but Mikel Arteta got the nod last night and put in an underwhelming performance.

Jack Wilshere has had continued injury problems, with the England international not featuring this season so far and expected to be on the treatment table for a significant period of time.

Arsenal’s start to the new campaign has been inconsistent as yet, with the Gunners not showing their best form as yet.
