The manager says he is surprised by how quickly the new West Ham star has settled into the squad.
The Frenchman was a summer signing from Marseille as Bilic sought to overhaul his squad in their aim to play more attractive football in future.
Payet has hit the ground running, with his latest performance seeing him score both goals in Monday’s 2-0 win over Newcastle United.
And Bilic says he is not surprised by these performances but the speed in which he has gelled into the squad is what has surprised him the most.
“He is fantastic but he doesn't surprise me,” Bilic told whufc.com.
“The only thing that surprised me is that he gelled straight away but then we have great lads with a good character in the team. Every new player is welcome straight away.”
A step up from Stewart Downing
If there is one thing that Payet has already done, it is take West Ham to the next level in that number 10 role.
It was where Stewart Downing played for the side to some effect last season under Sam Allardyce, but Payet has so far taken it to another level with his performances.
Although five games is too soon to be making serious judgments, the midfielder has certainly impressed so far, and West Ham will be hoping it continues for the rest of the season.
