Both players made a positive impact in their latest substitute appearance.
Newcastle United boss Steve McClaren has suggested - via quotes published in the Shields Gazette - that Ayoze Perez and Siem de Jong are in line for a start following decent cameos in Monday’s defeat at West Ham United.
An insipid Newcastle side were easily brushed aside courtesy of two Dimitri Payet goals, but the performances of Perez and de Jong as second half substitutes will have provided some consolation.
The attackers came on for the ineffective Florian Thauvin and Vurnon Anita on the hour and when asked if the Spaniard had done enough to give him food for thought, McClaren replied: “Absolutely…He came on and wanted the ball, took the ball and made a difference… That’s what we needed. He gave us that. We didn’t have too much elsewhere.
“I thought Siem came on and made a difference,” he added.
McClaren’s failure to start one of the club’s brightest prospects – in Ayoze Perez – has been a source of frustration for fans, but his latest comments suggest he is slowly realising the talent he has on his hands.
De Jong, on the other hand, is still something of an enigma after his injury-ravaged first year on Tyneside, but is one of few naturally creative players in the Magpies squad and could help to kick-start their stuttering attacking play and get them edging back up the Premier League standings.
