Manchester United defender Marcos Rojo returned to action last night for the side, but not in the circumstances he will have wanted to.
The Argentine was forced to come off the bench following the horror injury suffered by Luke Shaw in the 2-1 defeat to PSV Eindhoven last night, which led to Louis van Gaal reconfiguring his back line.
The United boss decided to break up a central defensive partnership that had proved pretty effective for much of the season so far. Daley Blind had partnered Chris Smalling but was operating on the left side after Rojo's introduction, with the substitute going to the heart of the defence. Judging by the reaction on twitter, not many agree with the decision made by van Gaal.
After Memphis Depay had given United the lead at the home of his old club, Hector Moreno - the player who made the challenge on Shaw which resulted in his injury - capitalised on some poor defending from the visitors at a corner shortly afterwards to equalise.
The winner was scored just before the hour mark when PSV's Luciano Narsingh managed to get in between both Rojo and Blind to head home and succumb Manchester United to defeat on their return to the group stage of the Champions League.
Here's how fans reacted to Rojo's performance in particular after he was introduced into the action and the odd tweet on the future of the side at centre back:
Breaking up the partnership between Smalling and Blind is something that could have further repercussions in future games to come.— The Man Utd Way (@themanutdway) September 15, 2015
The worry is we are now bare bones for a long time with Rojo at CB and Blind at LB. One more and we are truly buggered.— Rich Laverty (@RichJLaverty) September 15, 2015
I think we should have put Rojo at left full. But I don't know how we lost tonight. We looked exciting tonight but sloppy #mufc— Paul Coffey (@coffpau) September 15, 2015
Think you have to play Rojo at left back - blind and smalling building a good partnership— Aaron Collins (@shardman1981) September 15, 2015
Smalling & Blind are building a CB partnership and the latter lacks pace... so why did LvG move Daley to LB instead of playing Rojo there?— HannahCarrollDesign (@HannahCDesigns) September 15, 2015
Suddenly become a big season for Marcos Rojo, his United career starts here— Ash (@JuanAnderOnly) September 15, 2015
Expecting Rojo to perform having had 0 game time poor from LvG. SAF would have brought him on in a few games prior so ready if needed #mufc— Nick Allan (@nickaallan) September 16, 2015
