Could Liverpool soon add another Spanish player to their ranks?
The 21-year-old is predominantly a left winger who can also play on the opposite flank or as an attacking midfielder if required, and Liverpool are said to have earmarked him as one for the future.
The Echo reports that despite making 94 appearances for the La Liga club to date, Gomez has fallen out with the club’s manager Marcelino and has subsequently been sent out on loan to Getafe.
Said to be available for around £4million, Liverpool could be tempted into making a move in January as manager Brendan Rodgers continues to strengthen his side.
Whether Gomez is the type of player Liverpool fans want remains to be seen, with Rodgers’ signings being hit-and-miss since he took charge.
Gomez has scored seven goals and provided 10 assists for Villarreal and he is unquestionably talented; but Liverpool already have plenty of options in attacking midfield and wide positions so Rodgers’ job should surely be on bedding in the players he already has, as well as focusing on developing his own talented youngsters rather than constantly relying on new additions.
