Liverpool media round-up: Team news for Bordeaux, McManaman urges club to take Europa League seriously

A selection of the latest stories in the media involving Liverpool Football Club this Wednesday morning.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is expected to make a series of changes for tomorrow night's Europa League group stage opener in Bordeaux.

The Liverpool Echo reports that Mamadou Sakho is in line for his first start of the season at the heart of the Reds defence while Divock Origi is expected to be handed his first start following his cameo appearance during the defeat to Manchester United at the weekend.

The Daily Mirror reports that Christian Benteke is likely to be left out of the squad and will not travel to the game as Rodgers prioritises the Premier League clash with Norwich City on Sunday, but claims that Philippe Coutinho could play a part in France after he missed the United defeat through suspension.

Contrary to the Echo's report, the Mirror states that Rodgers is considering Adam Bogdan for a debut in goal, while the Echo says it is likely Simon Mignolet will keep his place.

The Echo's report states that Daniel Sturridge won't travel to France despite returning to full training - Joe Allen and Adam Lallana have also recently returned to training following injury, with the Mirror suggesting Lallana is in line for some game time to ease him back into action.

Alberto Moreno, Jordon Ibe, Jordan Rossiter and Kolo Toure are also said to be in contention for starting spots.

Former Liverpool midfielder Steve McManaman has told the Liverpool Echo that the Reds should take the Europa League with the utmost seriousness this season.

The former player turned pundit cites Sevilla's success in the competition over the past two seasons, and have earned their place in the Champions League as a result.

He said: “Not only is it a big European trophy but there’s the added bonus of where it takes you. It’s a big prize.

“The fact that the winners go into the Champions League has certainly added to the prestige of the competition.

“The likes of Sevilla, Benfica and Valencia always really embrace it and that’s what Liverpool need to do."
