The Liverpool boss could try something different in the Europa League that could also benefit him domestically.
Liverpool take on French club Bordeaux on Thursday evening with Reds manager Brendan Rodgers likely to make a few changes to the side that lost 3-1 against Manchester United last time out.
The Europa League will allow the Liverpool boss to give some fringe players a chance but it could also be a way to experiment for the club’s long-term benefit, and one way to do that this week would be to try summer signing Joe Gomez in central defence.
The 18-year-old is naturally a central defender but since swapping Charlton Athletic for Anfield this summer Gomez has made the left-back position his own with a string of impressive performances.
The problem is, not all of Liverpool’s defenders have been as effective and with Dejan Lovren continuing to look shaky at the back, Thursday would be the perfect chance to pair Gomez with Mamadou Sakho and see if it has the makings of an effective, long-term partnership.
Recalling Alberto Moreno would allow Gomez to move into the centre and if he performs as well there as he has in a wider position Rodgers could swiftly solve a problem that has seen his side concede six goals in two matches.
